The false economy of carry-on luggage

Aside from social media and email, there are two sites I visit habitually. One is Rightmove (for my property obsession) and the other Expedia (for my travel obsession).

While buying a sprawling house by the river with a basement kitchen that leads into the garden is completely improbable, buy a cheap flight to somewhere isn’t.

My problem when looking at the panoply of flights to my destination is I must always check the baggage allowance.

I recently flew from London to Peru for 10 days. lugAs I was booking my tickets, I thought I would check I was covered for a suitcase. I looked at my return flight details (it was Air France) and hand luggage and 1 checked bag were included. I assumed it would be the same for my outbound KLM flight. It wasn’t.

While it’s nice to encourage people not to pack so much. And I’m guessing a lighter aircraft makes it more fuel-efficient. I don’t know many people who go away for longer than a weekend who don’t need a suitcase.

Plus, what with all the airport security rules, you can’t possibly fit all the toiletries needed for longer into one of those little zip-lock bags.

So, the airlines have you. You are forced to pay them extra for luggage.

I get you need more people to get your luggage from the check-in desk to the aeroplane. And people the other side to unload it and throw it on the conveyer belt.
